Hello WanOnTheRoad Fam, last week i wanted to have a date with myself of course🤗. As Marriott hotel is not far from my house so my introverted side has cooperated to this great adventure. Come with me …

Location : La Sirène Restaurant-Marriott hotel
147, Avenue Jean Paul II, Turgeau, Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Sector : Food and Beverage

Marriott hotel is an international brand with two sectors accommodation and food/beverage. Located in the heart of Port-au-Prince, The hotel is not far from the all the public administration of the country, it is the reason why you’ll usually find those people eating or enjoying their day there. This restaurant offers a variety of tasty food from American to Haitian, and different beverages. At the time I went there, it was impossible to talk to the manager because they was busy, (you know wanted to know the history behind La Sirène), a waiter told me so he suggested me to talk to the supervisor. Her name is Hermine, she was busy too, after a moment she accepted to give me an interview. I asked her 4 quick questions.
The interview went like this:
1-
Question: Tell us about yourself, who is Hermine?
Response: My name is Hermine, I studied hospitality management in the Dominican Republic. I was inspired by my cousin’s husband who works as a manager of an ancient hotel in Jacmel, “Hotel Florita”. After my studies my dad called me as he heard about the opening of Marriott hotel in Port-au-Prince, he wanted me to work there. But I didn’t want to come. After a moment of deep thinking I accepted to come and I started an internship here, then Marriott Port-au-Prince sent me for another internship at Marriott in the Dominican Republic. Then I came back here, since I am working as a supervisor.
2-
Question: I don’t know if you have this information but why do they call the restaurant La Sirène? US money or La Gourde?
Response: The decorator loved the Haitian culture, but I have to tell you that Marriott hotel wherever they are, they appropriate the culture of the country. That’s why the Marriott hotel in Italy for example has a different decoration than this one in Haiti. I don’t like talking about that but it’s from the Voodoo religion. There are other places named after the Haitian culture also here such as Damballah. Marriott hotels pay employees in the local money.

3-
Question: What are the required skills to work as a manager or a waiter at La Sirene or other restaurant?
Response: Whoever wants to work in the food and beverage sector needs to study hospitality management or someone who took a cooking class can do the work too. It’s easy.
4-
Question: Tell us about the daily challenges in the hospitality industry, how do you deal with them?
Response: There are a lot of challenges in the industry, especially when it comes to dealing with customer moods. But the most important thing is to go slow with them, even though they talk very loudly. The thing is to not worry but listen.

In my point of view, you should visit La Sirène restaurant for those reasons
-The decoration, the restaurant appropriates the Haitian culture .
-The security system is strong because in a country like Haiti it is more than necessary.
-The music is not too loud and appropriate for any kind of mood.
-Cleanliness is on point.
-The professionalism of the employees.

I loved the adventure at La Sirène, and whenever I have time I’ll be back there again. It is now one of my favorite spots in town whether for family or friends gatherings. Let me know what you think.
